Several researchers from the SLA department of the HiLASE Centre, Prof. Nadezhda Bulgakova, Dr. Martin Zukerstein, Dr. Oleksandr Gatsa and PhD student Ghassan Aber, will take part in the 7th Venice International School on Lasers in Materials Science (SLIMS), which will be held on July 3-9, 2022 on San Servolo Island, Venice, Italy. The School addresses PhD students and young researchers working in the field of laser-materials interactions. The SLIMS Co-Directors are Professors Anna Paola Caricato (Italy), Wolfgang Kautek (Austria), Leonid V. Zhigilei (USA), and Paolo M. Ossi (Italy). Fifteen world’s leading scientists from Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Romania, Spain, and USA will give lectures to the SLIMS students on the principles of laser-matter interactions, along with bringing the students up-to-date with the current state-of-the art in laser materials processing. The lecturer from the Czech Republic is Prof. Nadezhda Bulgakova who will focus on the physical and computational aspects of continuum modeling of laser-matter interaction in short and ultrashort pulse regimes.
All the SLIMS students will present posters and short oral presentations, which will be discussed during the school week. The lecturers act as a referee committee to evaluate the poster quality, the quality of the scientific defense of the poster during the poster sessions and the quality of the oral presentation given by each student. Based on the evaluation results, three best-poster winners for two categories, Young Researchers (First- and Second-Year PhD) and Rising Stars (Third Year PhD and Post-doc), will be selected for the Roger Kelly Award. The Award is entitled to Roger Kelly who gave outstanding contributions in the field of laser-matter interaction and devoted much attention to the education of students and young researchers. The award ceremony will take place at the school closing on July 9.
